3 rob, beat Redlands man in wheelchair

...The men, who wore ski masks, approached the New York Street apartment of 29-year-old Steven Kile just before 10 p.m., said Redlands police spokesman Carl Baker.

Once the victim opened his door, the men forced their way inside, punching and kicking him before throwing him from his wheelchair, Baker said.

As Kile lay on the ground, the robbers ransacked his place, stealing his wallet and home electronics.

They also stole the computer-typing device Kile used to communicate, Baker said.

When the men fled, Kile called 911, but dispatchers heard only screams, Baker said.

Police who responded originally had a tough time finding out what happened.

"Eventually, he was able to write them a note saying he was robbed by three men," Baker said.

Paramedics treated Kile, who received cuts and bruises in the attack.

He lived alone, but has since moved to stay with someone who can provide care, Baker said.

No suspect description was available Monday.

One of the men was armed with a knife, but did not use it, Baker said.

It is unknown how the men fled the scene, or whether they targeted Kile because of his disability, Baker said.
