Kosair Charities puts school's sensory playground fund over the top... The playground will cost $307,000. Since 2001, the school had raised $223,000 through donations, grants and school district funds. "This year we decided we would make one final push," Portman said. "We had worked with Kosair before, and we met with them over spring break … asking them for $80,000. They called me up and said they had a surprise for us, but I had no idea they were going to give us more than what we had asked for." Kosair Charities is a nonprofit organization that provides more than $7 million annually to the community for causes that support children. "The fact that they worked so hard, we decided we wanted to give them as much as we could," Sewell said. "It makes us feel so good to have the opportunity to do something like this." Portman said the new playground will have features for children with different impairments. "It will have almost as many activities for wheelchair-bound students as those students who are ambulatory," she said. Construction will begin this summer and will be completed by the start of the 2007-08 school year. Reporter Antoinette Konz can be reached at (502) 582-4232.
