Festival plans to raise money for girl's kidney transplant

..."Last year's Village Fest completely paid for a van with a wheelchair lift for a girl who needed it," said Benjamin Ezra, the founder of Village Fest and local musician.

"Everything's changed for her family since last April." After hearing Nunez-Torres' story, he was interested in helping her.

But it was after speaking with her for the first time that he really got invested.

"She's the sweetest girl in the world, and she's an incredibly sharp girl.

Her family needs an advocate, and I'm hoping that the Village Fest will inspire others to create change," he said.

The headliner at this year's festival will be Georgia singer/songwriter Bill Mallonee.

Rock 'n' roll guitarist Mallonee was voted by Paste Music Magazine as the 65th Best Living Songwriter, and has a raw acoustic sound that transcends time.

Mallonee has played with Georgia natives REM, toured with the Dave Matthews Band and Ryan Adams, and had major success with his old band, the Vigilantes of Love, and as a solo artist.

"We're ready to step it up, and we hope that each year, the concert will get bigger and better.

The local music community has been incredibly supportive," Ezra said.

The first band to play will be this year's Battle of the Bands winner, Oh Discretion!

, which will open the festival at 4:30.

Last year's festival began at 4 p.m.

and didn't end until nearly 1 a.m.

Ezra is hoping that this year's concert will go even longer into the night.
