Wheelchair woman killed by train

...The wheels of the motorised wheelchair became stuck in train tracks at a pedestrian crossing at Carlisle station, 7km from Perth city, just after 11am yesterday.

After the boom gates went down, the carer, a 54-year-old woman who was last night undergoing counselling, tried to remove the 52-year-old sufferer from the jammed wheelchair.

Unable to lift her, she was forced to jump out of the express train's path at the last second, before it smashed into the wheelchair and the woman at high speed.

"As (the victim) was crossing, her wheelchair for some reason has fallen over and she has been thrown out," police spokeswoman Ros Weatherall said.

"She has attempted to get up but unfortunately the train has come through and she has been hit." Police and the Public Transport Authority were investigating the incident last night and had not released the names of the dead woman or her carer.

It is believed the train driver was also undergoing treatment for shock.

Police have called for witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers.
