Loralee can't speak or eat by herself but her bright, active mind and engaging smile captured Dorothy's heart, and at age 63, she adopted the 8-year-old.

Loralee is now 31 and still living with Dorothy.

Gustafson said he had to play a gentle trick to get Dorothy to the Rotary luncheon, "or she never would have come." The lunch, he fibbed, was about Loralee.

But the goal was met, and one of those "truly behind the scenes" people, as Gustafson calls her, has now been honored for her unselfishness.
