Chili Fest spices it up

Hanson found a few chili recipes that met his strict standards at Saturday’s Chili Fest, among those was at the booth of the Appalachian Family and Children First Council.Cook Vicky Riedel, service coordinator with the Council, said she didn’t put many fancy ingredients in the mix, just some good, old-fashioned hot sauce.

“I put a lot of ingredients and some good spices,” she explained.

“…I just like to cook.”Chili taster Jamie Griffith said she also liked spicy concoctions, “There are a few (chilis) here that have just the right blend of sweet and hot.

I don’t like the real strong spices or weird things like coffee and chocolate in my chili.

I just like simple and spicy.”Crissy Pratt, chili cook with the Open Door School Boosters, entered the event for the first time this year.

Her team’s Crock Pot was empty long before the event was over, a testament to its popularity among chili enthusiasts.“Ours was friendly kid-friendly.

It was not too hot,” she said.Sarah Diamond Burroway, chairperson of the event, said she was pleased with the turnout for the Chili Fest.
