In memory of Curtis Hoare... He wasn’t sad that he couldn’t walk or talk. Everything he did he had to do twice as hard,” said his mother Carol about her son who died from pneumonia at the age of 16. In fact, Curtis’s life was filled with “normal” activities. There was little he did not do, given a little help. “When he was younger his dad would pile wood in the wheelbarrow and sit Curtis on top of the wood. He felt he was helping,” recalled Carol. He was also witty and loved to surprise unsuspecting victims. “He liked playing hide and seek. We’d hide his wheelchair and his brothers would find him. He loved to sneak up on people and scare them. The more scared they were, the more he liked it.” But don’t be fooled into thinking Curtis didn’t have a stubborn streak. If he did not want to do something, he did not do it, said his mother. And when he wanted something, it was obvious. “He could make noises. If he wanted the TV channel turned he’d make a certain noise and Kolby would be right there to change it,” said Carol. “I had a good relationship with my brother,” said 12-year-old Kolby. “He taught me to look at the good things (in life) ... and to never give up (because) he overcame challenges every day.” Curtis is remembered for his ability to draw people to himself, said Carol.
