WalkAmerica event held

...They were among the 4,000 people from Middlesex, Hunterdon and Somerset counties to participate in WalkAmerica to raise money for research and programs to prevent premature births and infant mortality.

The participants walked for 6 miles beginning at the Rutgers Athletic Center in Piscataway."Jessica likes to say that if it wasn't for WalkAmerica and the sponsors, she wouldn't be here today," said Lattanzio of her daughter, an ambassador for the March of Dimes.The WalkAmerica event, which began in 1970, is the March of Dimes' largest fundraiser.This year's goal was to reach $375,000.

Last year, Middlesex County participants raised $339,000, said Bob Grandjean, the county's WalkAmerica chair.The group members, wearing orange, purple, gold, blue and shirts with pink and blue ribbons with the phrase "I'm saving babies," hugged and high-fived each other when they reached the finish line.Wearing royal purple shirts and gold shorts, about 200 students and teachers from South Amboy Middle High School showed their support for the cause Sunday."It's a way for the students to show they can make a difference with their actions," said the school's principal, Patrick McCabe.
