... Cyril Richards, who was still reeling yesterday from his partner’s horrifying death, paid tribute to the “love of my life” and spoke about how he could not understand how her wheelchair became stuck on railway tracks as a train approached.

“She was a happy and cheerful person, she would do anything for anybody,” he said.

“When she was in pain, she used to laugh it off and not let everybody know she was in pain.

“She had She would work for people who cared for other people and she did really well with her life.” Ms Gath’s wheelchair became stuck on the tracks as she crossed the Carlisle train station pedestrian crossing about 11.20am on Thursday.

Police believe the 54-year-old fell from her wheelchair as she tried to free it from the tracks.

Despite her 52-year-old carer’s frantic efforts to drag her from the path of the train, which was travelling about 80kmh, Ms Gath was hit and killed.

Mr Richards said his wife had bigger wheels fitted to the motorised wheelchair to reduce the chances of it getting stuck.

“It looks like she has gone off the side in a panic situation, the bells were probably ringing and she has panicked and gone off the side of the footpath,” he said.
