Handicapped student has his prom night

Wanting her son to experience a special occasion all high school seniors relish, Gwen Simmons, Simmons’ mother, arranged for her son to attend the prom.

Michael Cafaro made sure the gym was handicap assessable for Simmons’ big night.

When Simmons arrived, rolling up in a 1974 Desoto, blue Christmas lights illuminated dancing on the gym floor.

He was offered a colorful, plastic lei by school faculty members as he entered the school gym which was transformed into a night club by the junior class prom committee.

The table where Simmons sat was covered in sea shells and blue and white glitter along with a fishing net.

Material from a hula skirt was wrapped around the round table and behind Simmons ocean waves and sailboats made from cardboard enhanced the tropical theme.

Simmons was escorted to the prom by his big brother, Reno Simmons Jr., who graduated from Carvers Bay High School.

Sitting next to his brother, Reno Simmons said he felt a little out of place because he hasn’t been to a school prom in five or six years, but was having a great time and was honored to take his brother.
