Cycle trek to boost charity

...Rosy supports families who nurse terminally ill and sick children at home and helped the Sammons during their toughest times.

Mr Sammons said: "I wanted to do something to recognise the fantastic support we have had from Rosy and this seemed like a great way to do that." He and colleague Ashley Watts tackled the journey over four and a half days, cycling about 65 miles a day and camping overnight.

He said: "It was mentally exhausting, but gave me a lot of time to think about the charity I was doing it for.

"Although it was painful at times, I just kept thinking our pain was nothing compared to the youngsters whom Rosy helps." The ride raised about £5,500 and was such a success it could now become an annual event as others have already expressed an interest in joining Mr Sammons and Mr Watts next year.

Parents of 'miracle' girls support March of Dimes

..."One-third of the earliest premature babies who survive have major, major problems." Still, the Marshalls have twice gone through a harrowing experience that seemed to come out of the blue. Each of Courtney's first two pregnancies was normal.

The boys went to term; all was well.

But with Anne, her third child, there were problems early on.

Courtney was confined to bed for weeks before the birth.

Even though doctors said it was highly unlikely that she would have a second premature baby, her pregnancy with Molly echoed her pregnancy with Anne.

Again, Courtney was confined to bed for weeks; again, the birth came early despite delaying efforts. The doctors were not confident that Molly would make it.

"We said we would like to have her baptized," Courtney says.

"We went in to say goodbye."But Molly pulled through."She's stubborn," says her mother.

"That's the reason she's here, because she's stubborn.'' Each of the girls spent 12 weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit at Golisano. For a while, they couldn't be picked up.

And when they were finally home, they couldn't really go anywhere for a year because of concern over infection.

But now they are out and about, doing what children their ages do.

Anne is in the first grade; Molly is in preschool."They're a miracle," Courtney says.

"They're both miracles.

I look at them now and I ...
