A year ago, the only words 5-year-old Matthew Harshbarger could say were mom and no.That's more than his family was told to ever expect.

Matthew suffered intense bleeding in his brain before he was born eight weeks prematurely.At 18 months, a doctor informed Amy and Ken Harshbarger that their son's severe "I'm not sure we believed him.

Another friend we made and a visitor was a member of the rotary club so she could ascertain exactly where funds were needed.

My new roommate was also HIV positive so she was able to give me lots of information about her drug therapy.

She certainly had days of feeling quite unwell though and had to rest for the day.

We were invited to join in the celebrations and my goodness they know how to celebrate.

Our wonderful choir came too and we were made to feel most welcome.

There were some political speeches and we were thanked for the work we were doing in the community.

Our choir sang beautifully and was really enjoyed by everyone there at the community centre.

There was a braai, singing, dancing lots of hugs for us in appreciation and very exuberant dancing which you couldn't help but join in.

One young lad said to me ā€œOne day Africa will have peaceā€.

I do hope he is right but I think there is a long way to go since Mandela fought so hard for equality with the white community.
