Dogged efforts by student pay off

...That entailed running a one-girl fundraiser for the local Basset Hound Rescue & Adoption program.

She has raised more than $3,000 so far and is still counting the final proceeds.

“I'm just ecstatic,” Gerou said of the turnout for her raffle at the Poway street fair on Sunday.

Gerou single-handedly solicited hundreds of businesses for donations for prizes to benefit the nonprofit pet rescue group.

Her efforts were inspired in part by her love of animals and her basset, Abraham Lincoln.

And Gerou, who uses a wheelchair, was motivated to prove her physical limitations did not restrict what she could accomplish.

Jerri Caswell, head of the basset hound group, said that Gerou and her parents, Susan Miles and Robert Gerou, had made a lasting impact on her work, both financially and spiritually.

“I am humbled by this amazing family,” Caswell said.

“This family has instilled such a can-do work ethic in this young lady that she is going to go far.” Gerou plans to attend college next fall and become a zoologist.

Kosair Charities puts school's sensory playground fund over the top

...The rest are early childhood preschool students, some of whom also have disabilities.

The playground will cost $307,000.

Since 2001, the school had raised $223,000 through donations, grants and school district funds.

"This year we decided we would make one final push," Portman said.

"We had worked with Kosair before, and we met with them over spring break … asking them for $80,000.

They called me up and said they had a surprise for us, but I had no idea they were going to give us more than what we had asked for." Kosair Charities is a nonprofit organization that provides more than $7 million annually to the community for causes that support children.

"The fact that they worked so hard, we decided we wanted to give them as much as we could," Sewell said.

"It makes us feel so good to have the opportunity to do something like this." Portman said the new playground will have features for children with different impairments.

"It will have almost as many activities for wheelchair-bound students as those students who are ambulatory," she said.

Construction will begin this summer and will be completed by the start of the 2007-08 school year.
