Law Society public forum to address disability issues... Bill Morley, a lawyer with Fasken Martineau who is also joining the forum panel, says that being in a wheelchair hasn't stopped him from achieving success in the courtroom, and in life. Thirty-three years ago a car accident changed Morley's life. Today, he helps other accident victims regain their independence and rebuild their lives. As part of the forum panel, Morley will share his personal journey to a successful career in law. Morley sees more opportunity for people with disabilities to work in the legal profession, and notes that the accommodations his law firm made when he was hired were minimal. "Everyone can win if you get past the 'he's in wheelchair, he's disabled,'" says Morley. "You're just hiring a person and hopefully it's a good fit and it'll be a good relationship for everybody. It's all about people." Equal Access for People with Disabilities will be presented by the Law Society of British Columbia in partnership with the BC Coalition of People with Disabilities and in association with the Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, the BC Paraplegic Association, CBC and The Vancouver Sun. Whatever we do it’s going to be cool,” said Kovach, who will be doing most of the restructuring of the wheelchair.Brandi Bellinger, 26, a member of the support staff at Developmental Systems where Baker participates in a day program, was inspired to organize the project about a month ago after seeing how Baker reacts to cars driving to nearby Gaddis Park.“Every time a real nice car goes by, he just freaks out,” Bellinger said.During one of her days off, Bellinger called Pro Car Stereo and Diamond Auto Upholstery, among other businesses, to ask for donations of equipment or time for the project. All but one business said yes to the donation request.Even though Baker can’t speak, there is no mistaking his wide-mouthed smile and arm gestures mixed with the head movements and sounds he makes to indicate his enthusiasm about the project.Despite having Fundraiser for little girl this Friday evening... Due to a few bumps on the head from the top of the mini van, Daniela Lutz, Vivien's mother, said, "no more, it is time to get a bigger van so she will not hit her head again." Daniela Lutz has put together a flyer that has been posted around town with all the information about the dinner and how people can donate money directly to the families account, one they specially opened just for the fundraiser. On the flyer it quotes Vivien, "I am a happy and friendly girl. All I want is to do what other kids do, play what other kids play and go where other kids go. Unfortunately that is quite a challenge and not always possible." This family is looking for help from the public to help raise money for a bigger van and make it more accessible (ramp, hooks, tie-down system, and modifications to the interior). For all who are interested in helping support this family, join them at the Verdi Club Friday, April 27 for dinner and a silent auction. The buffet is open from 5 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15, and the family asks you call for tickets before, tickets will still be available at the door.
