Long-shot therapy on trial

...Inside an office in an industrial section of Honolulu is the Hyperbaric Medicine Center.

The first stop on the tour by Maryellen Markley, its patient-care coordinator, is in front of two color brain scans that she said show the profound results of HBOT.

The first scan, she said, reveals that an autistic child had decreased blood flow and profound neuro-inflammation before the oxygen therapy.

"Look at how much has changed in the second scan," Markley said, pointing.

"Better blood flow, less inflammation, more connections between the two sides of the brain.

This child, a 6-year-old, was completely non-verbal since the age of 11/2, and after 66 hours of hyperbaric oxygen therapy was talking again." Markley said she has treated more than 30 autistic children with HBOT and "every single child ...

had consistent quality-of-life improvements." The improvements, she said, were more pronounced in kids most afflicted by the characteristics of autism: the repetitive behaviors and the impairments in sensory perception, social interaction and communication.

Critics argue that no studies have been done that use scientific models such a double-blind testing.

They caution that the treatment has been tried only on a handful of autistic children nationwide, not nearly enough to draw valid conclusions.

"They are making extraordinary claims without extraordinary evidence," Iyama said.

Evidence is exactly...

Helping kids conquer disabilities

...He's one of 71 clients there, all between the ages of 18 months and 8 years, and all suffering from severe disabilities: Most are in wheelchairs.

"These kids have to learn to crawl, to stand, hopefully to walk," said Marvin Leiken, executive director of the center.

"Some have to learn to chew and swallow." Despite the children's disabilities, Leiken and his staff focus on possibilities, not limitations.

"Every kid in this school has a chance to become ambulatory and learn to communicate," he said.

All the students have the potential to move at least into some sort of "supported employment," Leiken added.

Just how much potential some of these children have is often hidden.

As a teacher used music to encourage a class of children to move their arms and grasp a toy, an aide helped 5-year-old Jessica try to open and close her hand.

She is - for now, at least - trapped in her wheelchair, with the barest of motor skills.

Jessica has She cannot speak.

But inside that severely limited body lives a bright little girl.

"She is aware of everything," Leiken said.

"She's been tested for cognitive skills, and she tests above grade level." What are her possibilities?

Leiken paused before answering.

"She's basically a kindergartener.

She's reading.

She recognizes colors.

She's lear...

Indian President Kalam due Wednesday on state visit

... President Kalam will also pay a visit to the Faliron War cemetery in Athens, where there are graves of Indian servicemen who died during World War II.

Greece has cordial and friendly relations with India, supports Indian’s claim for permanent membership of the UNSC, and was one of the countries that co-sponsored the G-4 draft resolution on UNSC expansion, the embassy announcement said.

Recent visits to Athens of minister of state for external affairs Anand Sharmain August 2006, and a Parliamentary delegation led by Lok Sabha (House of the People, the Indian parliament's lower house) Somnath Chatterjee in September 2006, and a visit by Greek National Economy and Finance Minister George Alogoskoufis to India in February 2007, have given momentum to relations between Greece and India.

Greece is a member of the EU, the Eurozone, the Schengen Group, and has been playing an active role in the integration of South Eastern European and Balkan countries into the EU, the embassy announcement noted.

It said that about 13,000 Indian migrants, mostly from Punjab, are in Greece, working mainly on farms.

According to figures released by the embassy, Indian exports to Greece rose sharply to 614 million dollars in 2006 from 396 million dollars in 2005, marking an increase of 55 percent, while Greek exports to India jumped to 63 million dollars in 2006 from 42 million dollars in 2005, rising...
